Chocolate Covered Pretzels – A Sweet and Salty Taste Treat!
While it is difficult to find the specific origin of the pretzel, the earliest recording of them was in a monastery somewhere in the region of Southern France and Northern Italy as far back as 610 AD. The original version of the pretzel was a strip of dough, given to children for memorizing parts of the Bible. It was called ‘pretiola’ which is Latin for reward. The pretiola quickly gained popularity and was made in other parts of Europe such as Germany, where it took on the German name, bretzel. And how it quite happened isn’t sure but along the way, the bretzel and the pretiola became the pretzel!
Though the exact history of the chocolate covered pretzel is also clouded, there are references that imply that the chocolate covered pretzel was actually invented by Herr Franz Joseph Liebniz in 1544 in Hamburg. Owning a pretzel bakery, Herr Franz’s shop was close to a chocolatier. While this hasn’t been verified - it makes for a good chocolate story. In the end, for all the chocolate lovers, where the chocolate-covered pretzel was first created isn’t nearly as important as the fact that it this scrumptious combination was created!
While the United States has long consumed pretzels, it is only in the last couple of decades that the chocolate covered pretzel phenomena has gained prominence and become one of the favorite chocolate treats! Biting into and tasting the crunch of the pretzel combined with the richness of the chocolate covering has the makings of heaven on earth! Whether you choose the bite and crunch method of enjoying chocolate covered pretzels or savoring the taste of the chocolate melting in your mouth before enjoying the pretzel is the subject of discussion for those that love these delicious snacks.
Chocolate covered pretzels can come in different flavors and shapes. For some chocolatiers, the smooth, rounded pretzels are used and then they proceed to coat with different types of chocolate such as dark, white, semi-sweet or milk. You can also find those that are using pretzel sticks or bars, which are then either half-coated with chocolate or completely covered with it. The all time American favorite seems to be the rounded version with a thick coating of creamy milk chocolate!
In the early years of this chocolate covered snack, some chocolatiers didn’t feel that the pretzel and chocolate was something that they added to their list of products. But with increasing popularity of chocolate covered everything, these have become a staple in almost all shops from grocery store shelves to the finest of gourmet shops. Creativity has increased and you can now find all kinds of ways and types to satisfy any chocolate covered pretzel craving! These fun chocolates also are great gifts for every age group! Who won’t smile and enjoy biting into something that has both a sweet and salty flavor!
